Traffic cameras ready to catch violators

Monday, November 21, 2005

Beginning next week, if you run a red light at certain intersections, you will be caught.

The city will start using cameras at area intersections to photograph red light runners on Monday. The trial period was supposed to start November 1, but the paperwork wasn't all signed.

For the first 30 days, motorists caught running the red lights will be sent a warning by Houston Police. After 30 days, the red light runners will be sent an official ticket, including a picture of the car and the license plates.

Some drivers are being more cautious about running a red light and not getting hit by those violators.

"I'm being more cautious, too, I guess," said motorist Margie Wright

"All of the time, when you're sitting on your green light and they just shoot right through that, that's an accident on every corner. That's peoples' lives out there, you know, especially when they know that the lights there, they need to slow down," added driver Earl Williams.

The red light camera locations are at Travis at McGowen, Milam and McGowen, Milam and Jefferson and San Jacincto and Texas.

City officials hope to have at least 60 cameras placed through mid 2006.
