Detectives say suspect in missing girl case linked to another disappearance

Thursday, December 08, 2005

There's been a new development in the ongoing search for 12-year-old Teketria Buggs. Investigators in Fort Bend County say they're now looking into another mysterious disappearance from several years ago.

As authorities continue to look for Buggs near a home in Orchard, they say new information has come in on another person who went missing in the very same area seven years ago. Detectives say those leads point suspicion at 21-year-old Steven Carrington.

"He is a suspect in our opinion in both of those cases," said Chief Greg Brady with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.

Carrington is the stepfather of Buggs and authorities say he also was a friend to 21-year-old Corey Brooks, who vanished here in 1998. At the time, investigators say they privately considered him a suspect in the disappearance, thought they could never find enough evidence to charge Carrington with any crime.

This is the first time Carolyn Brooks says law enforcement has publicly named a suspect in her son's case.

"I've been waiting on this moment for a long time," she said.

Carrington was arrested Monday on an act of domestic violence warrant not related to either missing persons case. He has not been charged with any crime related to either disappearance.

Carrington refused our request for a jailhouse interview, though authorities say he still denies any involvement in any crime.

Brooks has never held a memorial service for her son because his body has never been found, though she never would want another child to disappear. She says she is sad, but thankful that tips from her son's case have surfaced with the disappearance of Buggs.

"This little child is an angel in my life and I'm praying for her every day," said Brooks.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Teketria Buggs, call Ft. Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS. Volunteers are needed in the search. They need people, boats, ATVs, or anything you can do to help. If you're interested, call the Orchard Volunteer Fire Department.
