(1/04/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) (KTRK) -- City Council is officially meeting for the first time this year and things haven't exactly gone as planned. In fact, an egg brought the action to a screeching halt.
It's an interesting way to start the new year. First, the mayor and the council members were inaugurated on Tuesday. Wednesday is the beginning of the official session, with four new members at the council table. They include Peter Brown, at-large member, Anne Clutterbuck, representing District C, Sue Lovell, at-large member, and Jarvis Johnson, representing District B.
The council went through discussions on a variety of issues, but they were interrupted by a gentleman who likes to be called Senator Robert Horton. While he spoke, police removed a newspaper he held in his hand that concealed an egg.
Horton then produced a second egg. But rather than throwing the egg at anyone, he simply crushed it in his hand while standing at the podium. Police officers present at the meeting led Horton away at that point.
Senator Horton is a weekly presence at the public session of city council. In fact, about two years ago he threw an egg that narrowly missed Mayor Pro-Tem Carol Alvarado, hitting the wall above her head.
No one was injured in Wednesday's incident. Horton was led away peacefully.
When asked why he doesn't have Horton banned from council meetings, Mayor Bill White's staff explained he wants meetings open to all members of the public, and the mayor does not want to ban anyone, even if they happen to be carrying eggs.
