City leader would support public safety tax

Tuesday, February 14, 2006

There's no question Houston needs more police officers, but before HPD can put out the help wanted sign, there's money to consider first.

Right now, the number of officers on city streets is far below the national standard. And while there is no proposal on the table, Houston City Councilman Adrian Garcia says he would support a public safety tax.

"It may allow us to improve and deal with these public safety issues while alleviating some pressure off the general fund," said Garcia.

If there was a new tax, the public would have to vote on it first.
