(2/22/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) (KTRK) -- Foggy weather made a high speed police chase on the Katy Freeway even more dangerous overnight. Houston police believe it started with a handful of car thieves caught by a security guard.
That off-duty police officer working security noticed what was going on at the Pinehurst Estates apartments on Briar Forest near W. Sam Houston Parkway in west Houston. He managed to get two suspects into custody with the help of backup from a Precinct 5 deputy constable.
Three other men got away, leading police on a chase that reached 90 miles per hour at times. The suspect led police north on Beltway 8 and west on I-10 to Brookshire. Katy police finally laid spike strips to stop them there.
Houston police say they found four or five stolen cars at the complex, and it's likely the owners don't even know it yet.
"If we haven't contacted them, by the time they get up, they'll know then," said Sgt. Bruce Eichenberg with the Houston Police Department.
The men are all facing car theft and felony evading charges. The men could possibly even face charges of injury to an officer because the original officer's hand was hurt during the struggle to get the first two men into custody.
