Police search for sex assault suspect targeting apartment residents

Thursday, March 23, 2006

HPD is on the hunt for a man accused of attacking four women. Investigators say more victims might be out there.

Police have released a composite sketch of the suspect they believe is responsible for at least four sexual assaults and possibly even more. One attack happened in December and three more occurred in February. Police say the suspect is 30 to 35 years old, 5'11" to 6'0" tall. He is described as 180 to 200 pounds, muscular and clean cut. Investigators say the man targets apartments. He simply knocks on the door, usually where women are, and simply asks a question, such as borrowing a pen. At that point he grabs the victims' necks and puts a gun to their heads. The victims report the man threatens them in broken Spanish and then sexually assaults them. He has also stolen money and jewelry in some cases. After the assault the man orders the victims to go to a closet or bathroom and stay there for 15 minutes. That gives him the chance to get away. HPD Investigator Jimmy De Los Santos worried, "He'll become more dangerous towards the victims, because of the way he's operating. He doesn't hesitate to grab them and actually make them feel like he's going to hurt them." Police say all four victims are Hispanic women and the suspect reportedly made a comment that he believes Hispanic women are beautiful. They feel that is who he is targeting, but officials warn all women not to open their doors to this man. The attacks have happened in various areas of the city. One victim reports she saw the suspect leave the scene in a maroon Honda Passport. If you believe you know this man or have any information, you're asked to call the HPD Sex Crimes Unit at 713-308-1180. (Copyright © 2006, KTRK-TV)
