Activities rally after girl claims she was abused by HISD police

Friday, April 14, 2006

Local activists staged a march on Friday to protest what they call brutality against students by HISD police.

The protesters marched around Jesse Jones High School in southeast Houston. On Tuesday, HISD police arrested a Jones student near the campus, claiming she swung a fist at a female officer.

Rochelle Spriggs argues that she wanted to find out why police arrested her sister and that officers slammed her face-first into the ground.

"I have several headaches," said Spriggs. "I can't sleep at night. I have scars all over my body. I go places, people stare at me."

The school district tells us a different story. HISD police say the girl resisted arrest and was placed on the ground to be handcuffed. They say she later began banging her head against a desk at the police office as she continued to resist arrest.

The school district says no abuse complaint has been lodged with HISD police.
