Shots fired upon HISD bus, injuring two

Wednesday, April 19, 2006

Students on an HISD school bus became the target of a gunman in southeast Houston Tuesday.

It was a terrifying ride home for the students when the bus was shot at near Scott and Airport. The bus driver kept going to Woodson Middle School to get away.

"I didn't do nothing to anybody," said Mya Woodard, who was on the bus at the time and injured.

The bus, carrying about 30 students from Westbury High School and Johnston Middle Schools, was making its afternoon rounds when somebody shot at it. The bullet went right through a side window, barely missing several sixth-grade girls.

"I heard a popping noise and then a bunch of dust came out," said Mya. "I felt something in my forehead and I started bleeding a lot."

Shattered glass hit Mya in the forehead and shoulder.

"A lot of the time, I thought it was a bullet," said Mya. "I got shot in the head. I was praying a lot because I didn't want to die."

Kendria Holmes was injured on her back and neck.

"We were just talking and we heard a loud pop and we just all got really, really scared," said Kendria. "And then I looked over and Mya was bleeding and they looked at me and my back was all bleeding."

Once the bus driver realized what had happened, he drove more than a mile to Woodson Middle School to get the kids out of danger. HISD police responded, collected evidence, and took pictures.

In the meantime, the frightened students sought comfort in their parents, but no one had answers to their questions.

"Why?" wondered Kendria. "Who did it? I want them to catch them."

Fortunately, no students suffered any serious injuries. They did tell police they saw a man running after the bus was hit, but it was only a vague description. Police were able to recover ballistic evidence at the scene.

An HISD spokesperson says there are no plans to alter the bus route.
