Suspect fleeing officers caught in former police chief's back yard

Thursday, April 27, 2006

A suspect on the run from the law picked the wrong place to hide -- in the back yard of a former police chief.

Police say a man broke into a home on Spellman and Plainfield in southwest Houston. When the homeowners arrived, the suspect went to a neighbor's back yard. That back yard belonged to former Kendleton Police Chief Johnny Baldwin, who was armed.

He confronted the suspect and got nervous when the man reached for his pocket and refused to lay down.

"I shot him in the leg and when he fell, he turned over. He pulled it out," said Baldwin. "I still have the gun on me. I was scared because I didn't know what he was coming out of his pocket with. It was a cell phone."

The suspect is expected to survive. Officers will refer the shooting case to a grand jury.
