Mayor upset over housing debacle near airport

Wednesday, June 07, 2006

Houston city officials are trying to decide what to do now with about 150 homes that were supposed to help a lot of low income families.

<!--html1--> The airport system purchased 158 homes near Bush Intercontinental Airport to make room for expansion. Non-profit groups bid on them in hopes of moving them to other neighborhoods later to provide low income housing for the poor.

During the time it took to work through the red tape, vandals have destroyed most of the homes. They took toilets, sinks, cabinets, and entire air-conditioning units.

<p. Developers are upset, saying most of the homes are not worth buying anymore. Mayor Bill White says he will try to find out who is responsible for dragging their feet on this deal.
