Boy shot while playing video games with neighbor

Monday, August 07, 2006

An 8-year-old boy was shot in the head Monday afternoon, while playing with a friend at a home in Liberty County. Shawn Hebert and his younger sister were at a friend's home.

Sheriff's deputies and family members of both the shooter and the victim are trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Shawn and his six-year-old sister went to a neighbor's house to play video games with the 9-year-old boy who lives there. There was a 13-year-old in the house, but according to investigators, there were no adults at home.

The 9-year-old apparently decided to play with his dad's gun, and at some point it went off, striking Shawn in the head. At that point, neighbors say they heard a knock on their door.

"They came barging in the house. 'Call 911, my brother got shot!' I took off and we went in and he was just laying there," recalled Tara Langham, the victim's cousin. "He was alert. He wasn't unconscious or anything."

Shawn was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight. He is listed in critical condition.

The other children have been questioned by authorities.
