Prostitution sting erupts into gunfire

Wednesday, August 09, 2006

Undercover officers got into a gun battle with a suspect overnight during a prostitution sting.

It all ended at a cigar and food shop in the Montrose area, but started earlier on Avondale, where police were working an undercover sting operation involving prostitution. That's when one suspect approached the undercover officers, claiming he was a police officer. A second man then came and started shooting at them.

The undercover officers chased the men on foot down the street and shot the suspect who opened fire on them. He was hit once in the chest. Eventually, that suspect was caught and taken to Ben Taub Hospital.

"Even though there were two officers involved, only one officer discharged at the suspect. The other officer did not," said Captain Dwayne Ready with the Houston Police Department. "No officers were hit."

The second suspect, who was not shot, managed to get away.

The wounded suspect is expected to live. Authorities say he could face charges of attempted capital murder of a police officer.

The officer who shot him has been on the force for more than 20 years.
