Local baseball star Barfield faces assault charge

Monday, August 21, 2006

It's unclear if an arrest this weekend will have any effect on the future of a local baseball star.

Jeremy Barfield graduated this past year from Klein High School and was drafted by the New York Mets in the ninth round. Sunday morning, he was arrested on a misdemeanor family assault charge. Investigators say he pushed his father, Jesse Barfield, down the stairs during an argument.

Friends of Barfield say he's a shinning star on the field and this should not affect his MLB dreams.

"Its family stuff. You can't really get too involved in it," said family friend Matt Mara. "As a friend, I wouldn't want to say anything to hurt them. They're great people. I haven't known them to have any trouble together."

The Barfield family says together they are dealing with this situation. Barfield is expected to sign with the Mets in a matter of days.

Jesse Barfield is a former Major League Baseball All-Star. His career spans from 1981 through 1992 when he played with the Blue Jays and Yankees. He attempted a comeback in 1994 with the Astros, but didn't make the team because of a thumb injury. In 1995, he helped coach the Astros outfield.
