(9/13/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) (KTRK) -- Tempers and eggs were flying at Houston's city hall Wednesday. For the third time in two years, an egg has been splattered during a city council meeting.
It's the same person who comes to city council meetings every week. The man, who identifies himself as Senator Robert Horton, usually just speaks. But for the third time in two years, he had an egg in his hand.
Horton was sitting in the audience when around 9:30am, we heard a bang. It was the egg splattering on the wall. Horton was led out by police.
In the meantime, city council paused for about 20 seconds before the meeting continued. They eventually took a five minute break to clean up the egg. Meanwhile, the man who threw the egg was placed under arrest.
Councilmembers say they're concerned about their safety.
"Today, it's just an egg. But tomorrow, it could be something else," said Councilmember Carol Alvarado. "And other people that are watching at home could be saying, 'Wow, city council, it's easy to come in and just throw things at people if we want.' I don't think that's the kind of environment that we want, so I would ask that whatever decision the administration makes and the HPD officers, whoever's handling that, that it be made in a timely manner."
Councilmember Alvarado was the target of the very first egg thrown about two years ago. City officials tell us that after this third incident, they're going to try to ban the man who calls himself Senator Robert Horton from coming to any more city council meetings. But they'll have a meeting to make that official.
