Striking janitors storm meeting of business leaders downtown

Wednesday, November 08, 2006

A few dozen people protesting in support of striking janitors stormed the Houston Club on Rusk at Milam downtown.

On Wednesday morning, striking janitors held a rally outside the Houston Club as it hosted a meeting of the Greater Houston Partnership and local businesses. The businesses are located in buildings which employed the striking workers. The strikers want higher wages and health care.

Spokesperson Lynda Tran said, "Janitors are just trying to make sure people hear them. So they were inside the building just now to send the message to building owners like Hines, major business leaders like Shell, to let them know that can't continue to live on $20 day and no health care."

Nearly 2,000 janitors went on strike three weeks ago and have staged numerous rallies around town. Wednesday's protest did not cause any major disruptions.
