U of H students accuse school of promoting sweat shop labor

Monday, November 13, 2006

Some University of Houston students are accusing the school of trying to cover up labor abuses.

A group called Students for Fair Trade claimed U of H is connected to slave labor. The students say clothing and uniforms worn by U of H sports teams are made by child laborers.

"These clothes being sold in the bookstore are non-sweat free which means child labor, forced labor, people working in sweat shops," said Tim O'Brien of Students for Fair Trade. "I don't think the university needs to be involved in promoting child and slave labor."

Eric Gerber, the University of Houston spokesperson told us, "This matter is of ongoing concern at the University of Houston. We've had discussions and continue those discussions."
