(12/05/06 - KTRK/KATY, TX) (KTRK) -- A middle school student and an alleged hit list prompted police to launch an investigation at an HISD school. Administrators say they received a tip from a parent who said their child saw the list while riding the school bus.
Administrators say it started on the school bus Friday when a student saw what was described as a "hit list" in the hands of a 12-year-old Pin Oak Middle School. That's upsetting news to parents of the children who go there.
"You have to take all precautions and make sure it doesn't happen," said parent Larry Myers.
"Considering the recent rash of violence in schools, you can never be sure," added parent Leigh Williams. "If the student has a problem, they need to be removed from campus."
HISD Spokesperson Terry Abbott says they acted immediately and now the bigger question is just how serious the girl was.
"The student was suspended. That was the initial disciplinary action," he told us. "If the investigation shows there was any harm intended, then obviously we'll take it to the next level."
The district believes some of the names on the list are made up, but at least one was not.
"I don't know if she was serious or had a mock list, but for someone to come up with that kind of idea is serious and they need to be more attentive to their child," said Myers.
Whatever the intentions, parents picking up their children say in today's schools, there is no room for joking when it comes to safety.
"Say a prayer when you send them off and hope you see them when the bell rings to get out," said parent Paula Catarineau.
Police reports have been filed with HISD police and Houston police. Administrators say that student will no longer be allowed to ride the school bus.
