(12/20/06 - KTRK/LEAGUE CITY, TX) (KTRK) -- All alone and naked, two toddlers were found wandering in the street in League City. The little girls are just one and two years old and now, police are investigating the girls' entire family.
The two girls were found wandering along Perkins Avenue around 8am Wednesday. Neither of the girls had clothes on at the time and the two-year-old had a cut on her hand. A good Samaritan saw the kids and put them in diapers and a T-shirt.
About an hour later, police figured out that the girls lived at a nearby apartment complex. When they got there, they found the girls' mother and their grandmother, as well as two more girls -- a six-month-old and seven-year-old -- living in what they say are filthy conditions. The circumstances have sickened police officers, as well as the woman and her son who helped the toddlers.
"They're so little that you could almost hit one of them without even seeing them before it was too late," said Susan Gonzales, who found the girls. "So we were really, really glad we found them."
"There was food strewn about the floor of the apartment," said Sgt. Dan Krieger with the League City Police Department. "There were knives on the floor, scissors on the floor. It was filthy. There was feces. There was urine. It was horrible living conditions for those girls."
All of the children have been placed in protective custody. The League City police department has been raising some money to buy clothing and other items for the girls while they're in foster car.
According to the police department, the boyfriend of the mother told them he may have left the door unlocked and said the mother was aware he had left and the door may have been unlocked.
The mother of those two girls has not been arrested, but she is facing two counts of child endangerment.
A foster family has taken in the four little girls in League City. Since it's five days before Christmas, the League City Police Department is asking for donations such as clothes, toys and baby supplies to help. You can drop them off at the League City Police Department at 500 West Walker Street in League City. You can also call 281-332-2566 ext. 885.
