Boy crushed to death by gate at apt. complex in NE Houston

Thursday, January 11, 2007

Inspectors with the Houston Fire Department plan to return to the scene of a tragedy Thursday morning, where a four-year-old boy was killed by a falling gate at an apartment complex.

It happened at an apartment complex on Parker and Homestead in northeast Houston. Ron Keith Andrews was walking by the gate with his sister just before 5pm Wednesday when the gate fell on top of him and killed him.

Management at the complex says the gate is usually locked and should only be used as an emergency fire entrance. The family and the community want to know who, if anyone, is responsible.

"From my standpoint, we want to find out if there were any code violations for this particular apartment complex. If in fact there were any code violations, I want to know if the apartment owners address them," said councilmember Jarvis Johnson.

A spokesperson for the apartment management says this is a tragic accident. He sends his condolences to the family and says the complex will fully cooperate in the investigation.
