Recycled Christmas trees help rebuild sand dunes at Surfside Beach

Saturday, January 20, 2007

A unique way to recycle Christmas trees is going on this weekend at Surfside Beach -- it's called Dunes-Day.

Residents donate their Christmas trees and they are tied end to end, and placed on sand dunes to help build them back up again. Two years ago, during Hurricane Rita the dunes were damaged and this is just one of the ways they are being built up.

"It works. It definitely works," said volunteer Jean Loedeman with Brazoswood High School. "It's an organic product. It's recycling at its finest."

Each of the trees acts as a magnet for the sand, essentially trapping it and that's how the dunes are created. Over the past few days, more than 80 volunteers have turned out to help.
