(1/31/07 - HOUSTON) -- An advisory committee now assigned to Texas Southern University has until mid-March to come up with a plan to help get the school out of debt.
<!--html1--> According to a recent audit, TSU needs $54 million from taxpayers over the next ten years to pay for repairs to the school's administration building. Also, the athletic department was found to be $2 million over budget. Governor Rick Perry created the 11 member advisory committee to help come up with a solution.
Among the members is Former President of the local NAACP chapter, Harold Jefferson.
"The governor is concerned that TSU needs to improve, get on the right track and become a first class university, and that's what I want to be a part of it," said Jefferson.
Also among the members of the new advisory committee is Larry Faulkner, who until a year ago today was the President of the University of Texas. He is currently the President of the Houston Endowment.
The committee includes:
- Glenn Lewis of Fort Worth, as chairman
- Gary Bledsoe of Austin
- Judge Zinetta Burney of Houston
- Larry Faulkner of Houston
- Anthony Hall Junior of Houston
- Howard Jefferson of Houston <li.Doctor Raymund Paredes of Austin
- Richard Salwen of Austin
- Cynthia Spooner of Houston
- Richard Knight Junior of Dallas -- and Albert Myres of Houston
Perry's executive order creates the Texas Southern University Advisory Committee and seeks recommendations by March 15th.
