Local private eye tells signs of cheating spouses

Wednesday, February 07, 2007

Authorities say the arrest of astronaut Lisa Nowak is a direct result of a love triangle gone bad. Police say they found what they consider to be a love letter to a fellow astronaut in the car of the married, but separated mother of three.

We're taking a closer look at how and why some say it's become more common than ever to find that the person in a marriage who is unfaithful is not the man.

Local private eyes showed us photos of real people in real affairs.

"It's very real," said Jeff Moore with Blue Moon Investigations. "We see it every day."

Each picture shows a spouse cheating on the person to whom they pledged their eternal devotion.

"It just seems that wherever they seem to find time to have a rendezvous, they seem to hook up," said Moore.

Moore says most of his business is with people who come to him with suspicions of infidelity.

Private investigators say they're seeing more and more men as clients, men who are suspicious of their wives.

"Now we've got the men coming just as much saying their wives are cheating on them as well," said Moore.

One man who asked us to conceal his identity is one of them.

"Devastation is the word I can put on it," he told us.

His wife of five years began disappearing for hours on end. Blue Moon caught her on tape with another man, something she at first denied.

"She was very upset that she was caught," he said.

Moore has investigated thousands of these types of cases. He says that women generally are more difficult to bust than men.

"They don't leave receipts in their pockets. They don't leave things on the computer. They don't come home late," said Moore. "They find ways to stay within the norm."

Psychologists are studying why it seems more women than ever before are willing to step outside of marriage.

"It's hard to say exactly what it is that has led to a rise in women doing it, but it is a phenomenon," said Clinical Psychologist Dr. John Vincent

Dr. Vincent is a clinical psychologist with the University of Houston. He says there are no concrete numbers on the issue. He attributes the rise in cheating in part to the number of women now working outside the home. Whether an affair is a one night stand or long term relationship, he says there are countless reasons.

For some, it's the rush. For others, it's a fulfillment of physical or emotional needs they're not getting at home

One thing psychologists like Dr. Vincent can say for certain is there are not many marriages which can survive a cheating spouse.

"Having an affair is sort of like dropping a nuclear bomb in the middle of a relationship," he said.
