(3/09/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) (KTRK) -- Animal control officials are on alert in Spring Branch after what may have been a coyote attack.
The attack reportedly happened early Friday morning near Cedar Brook Elementary. A woman says she was out walking a few dogs between 4:30am and 5am when it happened.
Just across a fence from the school, there's a wooded area where coyotes have apparently lived for years. The woman made it to the elementary school when a coyote apparently went under the fence and grabbed one of her dogs.
"The coyote came across right in this area here," said Chief Charles Brawner with Spring Branch ISD, showing us an area under the fence where the coyote apparently got through. "He slid right underneath the wrought-iron fencing and came up on the other side. About 50 or 60 feet up from the fence was the small dog. The complainant was up on the mound on the other side. There was nothing she could do. It happened real quick."
"I know they killed somebody's dog today," said Spring Branch resident Candi Velasquez. "Unfortunately, when I saw the coyotes and I took pictures, I took six months, I reported it to the forest department and everybody else I could report it to try to get them relocated."
As for the school, they canceled all outdoor activities Friday. They're going to redo the fencing during spring break to block any big gaps that could put anyone in danger.
