Bridge collapse forces residents to leave subdivision by foot

Saturday, March 17, 2007

Work crews are trying to repair a collapsed bridge that has a Fort Bend County subdivision accessible only by foot.

The bridge collapsed leads into the Peach Creek subdivision about two days ago. County workers came out and put large sheets of metal as a temporary fix but those collapsed.

Residents can only get in and out of the subdivision on foot. We spoke to one man who was driving across the bridge.

"I got the electric windows down and pulled myself out got over to the edge of the bridge," said victim Arthur Gibson. "The truck is gone of course. I'm just glad it wasn't somebody else in a smaller vehicle that would have gone into the big hole."

The county blames the collapse on recent heavy rains and wear and tear.
