Lawmaker wants River Oaks center left open

Thursday, April 05, 2007

Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D) of Texas wants to find a solution to keep a longtime Houston facility for the mentally challenged open.

Earlier this week, we told you about the problems at the center located at Allen Parkway and Shepherd. It sits on city owned land near River Oaks. Now the city wants to sell the land, which means the center would have to relocate.

Advocates are worried about the hundreds of people who count on the center for help.

Since 1963, the center has been paying one dollar a year to lease the land which is now prime real estate. A broker recently estimated the property's value at $26 million.

No word on when a final decision will be made on the fate of the center.
