Lawmakers plan to fight Governor's recommendations for TSU

Sunday, April 15, 2007

Governor Rick Perry could have a real political fight on his hand come tomorrow morning.

<!--html1--> There are a lot of Texas Southern University supporters who don't like the governor's plans for the embattled school. Friday the governor announced that he wants to appoint a conservator to oversee the rebuilding of the school's finances and reputation, and he's asked TSU's board members to resign.

P> There is already however strong disagreement with that plan. And tonight a handful of local elected leaders spoke with one another on a conference call to discuss how they proceed in opposition.

"I'm concerned about whether or not a lot of thought has been put into this plan of a conservatorship before leaping out there just to give the impression that you're doing something," said State Sen. Rodney Ellis.

The big concerns among the elected leaders focus on what effect a conservator would have on future enrollment at TSU, how it affects tenured teachers, and what it means for the morale of the students and faculty there.
