Group takes action to save River Oaks and Alabama theaters

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Wheels have started turning to get the River Oaks and Alabama theaters declared historical local landmarks.

The Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission on Wednesday unanimously voted to start the application process to get the River Oaks shopping center, River Oaks theater, and the Alabama theater declared city of Houston landmarks.

"We feel if there's ever a time we should be bold and initiate designation ourselves, this is the time to do it," said Phoebe Tudor with the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission.

Weingarten Realty owns all the properties, but said it does not have current plans to demolish the buildings.
