Woman, 85, unhurt as friends catch robbery suspect

Tuesday, May 08, 2007

Some northeast Houston residents turned into crime fighters today after someone robbed one of their elderly friends.

On Tuesday morning, Lena Williamson, 85, started to leave the Woodforest Bank at Woodforest and Uvalde when her car conked out.

An eyewitness, who calls Williamson his second mother, said she asked a man for some help fixing her car but he stole her wallet and took off. Williamson's friends showed up and tracked the man down in a nearby neighborhood.

"I told him to get out and hold him there, and there was an officer there in line to get doughnuts at Shipley's. So I went and grabbed the officer and told him they just robbed my mama, get over here," said Curtis Morton.

Police arrested the man without incident. Williamson was not hurt and did get her wallet back.
