Mayor lauds cell phone program for hearing impaired

Thursday, May 10, 2007

The City of Houston wants to make sure people with hearing impairments can use something many of us take for granted.

Thursday, the city announced a new program. If they qualify, people with hearing disabilities can get a free cell phone. It uses newer technology that's less likely to interfere with hearing aids, and has better sound quality.

"Those people who have hearing disabilities struggle every day. I know. My dad is one of them, and now there is a new program that can assist," Mayor Bill White said.

There are 300,000 people in the area who use hearing aids, and an even larger number that have hearing loss and other impairments.
