Houston police officer survives being shot in the face

Thursday, May 31, 2007

A suspect and a police officer are both recovering from a shootout in southwest Houston.

It happened on Renwick and Bellaire last night. According to police, two uniformed officers stopped to question three men who were seen jaywalking in the area.

An officer searched one person and found a gun. They say a second suspect suddenly pulled out another gun and fired on one of the officers. The officer was grazed on the ear by a bullet.

"The officer that took down the first suspect, seeing that his partner had been fired upon, and thinking he may have been fired upon, fearing for both his life and the life of his partner then fired upon that second suspect," said Captain Bruce Williams with the Houston Police Department.

The suspected gunman was shot once by police and taken to a hospital. His condition is not known. The officer who was grazed by a bullet was also taken to a hospital to be checked out. He's expected to be OK.
