No jail for woman accused of removing mom's breathing tube

Tuesday, June 05, 2007

A Pasadena woman accused of pulling the plug on her paralyzed mother will not go to jail in connection with her mother's death.

Talisha Kendrick on Tuesday pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in the death of her mother, 60-year-old Brenda Leverett.

Police originally charged Kendrick with murder, accusing her of taking the breathing tube out of her mother's mouth. Prosecutors later accused Kendrick of negligence for putting herself in a position to not be able to hear the ventilator alarm going off.

"For the past nine months, she had been under the cloud and the suspicions of having something to do with murdering her mom. And I think y'all saw the plea here today, and it's clear she did not intentionally murder her mom, that she had no part in the death of her mother," said Skip Lanz, Kendrick's attorney.

A judge sentenced Kendrick to five years' probation.
