Houston Food Bank commemorates 25th anniversary

Tuesday, June 05, 2007

The Houston Food Bank celebrated its 25th anniversary on Tuesday by remembering those who struggle to get enough food every day.

The bank hosted an outdoor lunchtime celebration in front of City Hall to observe Hunger Awareness Day.

Eyewitness News anchor Don Nelson spoke at the event, which also featured music from the Salvation Army's Harbor Light Choir, and a choir of children from Kids Cafe.

"This is a day, really, to give thanks, that there are those among us who have that concern every single day," Mayor Bill White said.

According to the food bank, more than 33,000 people suffer from hunger every day in Houston. The Houston Food Bank feeds more than 80,000 people each week.
