Charges filed against woman after baby found in closet

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Charges have been filed against a woman who denied having a baby -- then police found a dead newborn in her closet.

Claudia Cortes, 23, showed up at Ben Taub Hospital yesterday morning.

Police say she looked as if she had just given birth. Police later found what appeared to be a full-term fetus inside her Southwest Houston apartment.

The medical examiner will determine what happened to the baby -- whether it was born alive, or if Cortes had a miscarriage. She's charged with tampering with physical evidence.
