(6/12/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) (KTRK) -- Investigators are working to find out who caused a collision on the south side of town that sent seven people to the hospital. That crash involved a tow truck driver and a car packed with people.
It happened around 8:15pm yesterday on Scott and Reed and involved a wrecker truck and another vehicle.
According to witnesses, the Allied Safe Clear wrecker driver was heading north on Scott when the car abruptly turned in front of him, causing a chain reaction. The wrecker bounced off the car and hit a power pole, causing the pole to fall and then hit a gas station sign. The wrecker driver came to a stop at the gas station.
"We were just walking by and all of the sudden, we heard a loud boom. And the lights went off in the apartments," said eyewitness Jesse Glover. "We just see people laying there and everybody rushing up right there. I hope everybody's OK."
Inside the car, there were at least six people, including a two-year-old child. All six people were taken to the hospital. The driver of the car is listed in critical condition.
The wrecker driver had his son with him. He was also transferred to the hospital with minor injuries.
Police were able to get the black box inside the wrecker. They'll use that to see if the driver was speeding. If he was speeding, he could face charges.
