Rap mogul Russell Simmons visits Houston

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Rap mogul Russell Simmons was in town Tuesday evening, but not to talk about a new rap star or his highly successful clothing line, Phat Farm.

This time, he was here to promote his new book, "Do You," already topping the New York Times' business bestseller list. More than 500 people lined up at the shrine of the black Madonna to get their books signed. In it, he gives twelve steps to success -- through spiritual growth, self-awareness and finding out what you do best.

He was asked about the recent controversy surrounding the firing of shock jock Don Imus for a racial slur. Simmons has since called for bleeping certain derogatory terms like the n-word from rap songs played on mainstream radio.

Simmons has another book-signing on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble on Memorial and Beltway 8.
