Church holds services after fire

Sunday, June 17, 2007

Fire investigators say an arsonist started the fire that severely damaged a 47-year-old church in Barrett Station, but the congregation vows to stay strong.

Even though the church is closed today, First Baptist Missionary's pastor still held services.

Parishioners were singing praises this morning from the gym at Drew Intermediate School.

Last Thursday's fire severely damaged most of the inside of the church. While fire marshals say it was deliberately set, it doesn't appear to be hate related. Despite all of this, Pastor Tommy Johnson vows to continue giving thanks.

"It might seem kind of strange, but we look at this as something God allowed and since he allowed it there's a blessing in it for us," said Johnson.

Repairs are estimated to cost $250,000 and take up to eight months to fix.

Nearly 50 years ago when the church first opened, services were held at this same school.
