Workers clear out storm drains in advance of predicted downpours

Friday, June 22, 2007

The city of Houston is getting storm drains ready to handle summer rain.

We went into southwest Houston this morning to check out a storm drain maintenance operation at Gessner near Bellaire. The department of public works expects more rain this weekend so they decided to clean out storm drains as a precaution to prevent any flood problems.

"We do answer requests from a lot of neighborhoods when it rains," said one worker. "The concern is high water, which is common. So we're actually on a proactive basis on an everyday basis to make sure those drains are cleared out."

The department of public works has cleaned out more than 91,000 drains in the city of Houston so far this year.
