Groundbreaking for rail-to-trail bikeway

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Mayor Bill White and City Councilwoman Carol Alvarado led a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park for the final leg of the Columbia Union Station rail-to-trail bikeway.

The project will build a one-mile-long, ten-foot-wide hike-and-bike trail. It runs from Polk Street to Texas Avenue.

"This will be an ideal opportunity for people to come out with their family's young children and be able to ride in a safe environment," Veon McReynolds, a cyclist, said. "Another thing it will be able to do is get the children out on their way to school in a safe manner."

The rail-to-trail bikeway allows cyclists to ride from the Texas Medical Center to downtown along a trail system that uses Union Station and an old railroad corridor.
