(9/04/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) (KTRK) -- It was back to class after the holiday weekend for students at Key Middle School. Concern over toxic mold had employees there calling for the school to close.
The union representing janitors and maintenance workers says mold inside the school and annex building at Key Middle School were to blame for several employees getting sick last weekend. An inspection Monday by HISD as well as city of Houston health inspectors found the mold inside the school is not toxic and the school is safe.
Most parents knew about the mold concerns but remain optimistic the school is safe.
"I think yesterday was the first time I even heard anything was going on," admitted parent Rachel Alvarez. "But it started making me question, because last year (my student) was in the clinic's office about twice a week. Almost the whole year she was going to the clinic's office with headaches and stomachaches. So now I'm starting to wonder if it had something to do with that, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see if that's what it was."
HISD also says the school is safe, saying it's cleaned the mold inside the school. It will also continue normal cleaning -- as recommended by health inspectors.
