HISD's superintendent gets earful on bond proposal

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

HISD's superintendent got an earful from people last night about a school bond proposal.

"I will work to see it passed, if you will promise that every school has a library," said one resident at the meeting last night.

Superintendent Abe Saavedra addressed a crowd at Greater Zion Baptist Church. Some feel their neighborhood wasn't given an opportunity for input before the proposal came out. Parents have a long list of concerns on how the $805 million bond will be spent.

Saavedra says there is still time to make changes.

"If someone can make a strong argument about us needing to do something different in a particular school, the district is flexible enough to be able to do that. But it's going to be based on need,"he said.

Saavedra says postponing the November vote is not an option.
