Girl critically injured in hit and run accident in SW Houston

Monday, October 15, 2007

A toddler was seriously hurt after being struck at a crosswalk by a speeding driver, according to police.

It happened at around 9pm Sunday near Windswept and Highway 59 in southwest Houston. Police say Angel Hernandez hit the little girl, who was in the crosswalk near a flea market.

Police have still not said if alcohol played a part in the accident, but they do know that speed was a contributing factor.

Investigators say Hernandez didn't stop after he struck the girl. He then crashed his car into several more cars that were parked at a market on Windswept.

"We are going to find out how the child is doing at the hospital and then we will test the driver to see if he's been drinking tonight," said Sgt. Brian Jordan with the Houston Police Department.

The girl is listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

There was a passenger in the car. He was questioned. Hernandez was charged with failure to stop and render aid. Authorities also charged him with intoxicated assault with a vehicle but it could change to intoxicated manslaughter given the condition of the girl.
