University goes to great lengths to move tree

Saturday, November 17, 2007

Rice University is spending some green to keep itself green.

On Friday the school transplanted the last of three dozen large oak trees which needed to be moved to make room for new dorms. Like the ones before it, this 175-ton, century-old oak was moved some 400-feet using a sophisticated system.

The school says it cost roughly $70,000 to move the tree, but says it had to spend the money to protect the oak trees, which it considers unofficial mascots.
