New homes for seized Yorkies

Monday, December 17, 2007

What a community response to the more than 30 Yorkshire Terriers seized from a home in Spring last week.

The SPCA has been caring for the animals. The group says hundreds of people have called ready to bring the animals to their homes.

She jumps like a jackhammer, poses like pop star. She has no name, and like the 30 or so other Yorkies at Houston's SPCA, this is only a temporary stop.

"We have had the biggest response for these dogs, pretty much of anything else that we've brought in," said Heidi Brasher with the SPCA>

They were brought in last Wednesday, 35 Yorkies altogether, rescued from a property in Spring which also included 57 peacocks, 121 roosters and 158 chickens. But its the Yorkies that have plucked at everyone's heart strings.

"The response has been amazing," said Brasher.

Denise Poole wants one for her mother.

"She just thought they were so cute and wanted a small dog to cuddle up with," she said.

But with only 29 dogs and 300 people who want one, SPCA officials accepted applications for 3 days and randomly drew names from a box this morning.

"And so we wanted to make sure we pulled names and did this orderly, and we'll give those folks a call and have them come on down," said Brasher.

Meantime, the Spring Yorkies have attracted a lot of attention and there's been a measurable increase in foot traffic as a result.

"It's wonderful," said Brasher. "And we love to see this much traffic in our shelter as well, because we know some other animals will get adopted in the meantime."

Some of these dogs still need to be spayed and neutered, but that's perhaps a small price to pay for a new name, and a new home.

About a half dozen of the Yorkies were injured when they were rescued. They are being cared for now in safe foster homes.
