Protesters are calling for the resignation of Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas following the death of an inmate in the county jail.

They gathered in front of the downtown jail Sunday afternoon to demand justice for Clarence Freeman. He died after a confrontation with corrections officers on New Year's Day. Jail officials say Freeman provoked the attack, but his wife calls Freeman a good man who wanted to help police in a murder trial.

"He called me and he said, 'You know what? I just seen a kid get shot. And I'm going to stay here until the police come'," said Cherry Bradley, Freeman's widow. "Clarence was a key witness in her son's murder. According to Harris County, he can't testify in that murder anymore, 'cause he's not here."

Freeman was in prison for writing a hot check. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
