Officers rescue toddler trapped by dogs

FRIENDSWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- A toddler was trapped in her crib by a bloody dog fight. Now one animal is dead and the little girl's parents are under arrest.

Just after noon today, Friendswood dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman who said two dogs were fighting inside a neighbor's home. The caller also said a baby was trapped in her bedroom by the fighting dogs.

Friendswood officers rushed to the home in the 400 block of Stoneledge. Once there, officers entered the home and found a bloody scene in the kitchen and hallway and they heard a child crying.

Officers forced open the door to the bedroom where the dogs and a 13-month-old child were located. One dog was shocked by a Taser , and the other dog was driven away with bean bag rounds as officers attempted to contain the animals and to force them into a back bedroom.

An officer was then able to pull the child from her crib and remove her from the home. The toddler, who had blood on her, was turned over to medics for examination and evaluation. The child was uninjured.

The bedroom was blood-stained from the fight between the two dogs, described as an American Bulldog and a French Bull Mastiff. A window in the bedroom had also been smashed as a result of the dog fight. One of the dogs died at the scene and the other dog was impounded by animal control.

At the time of the incident three children were in the home. Two older children, ages 13 and 11, ran to a neighbor's house for help when the dogs began attacking and told the neighbor the baby was trapped. When officers arrived at the scene, a female neighbor was in the front yard with a baseball bat yelling that the baby was trapped. The older boys told police that one of the dogs had broken out of its cage and began attacking the other dog.

The toddler's parents, Jonathan M. Newton, 26, and Angela K. Newton, 28, were arrested and charged with endangering a child, a second degree felony. Bond was set at $10,000 each.

CPS was also notified and consulted. The child was released to the custody of a relative.
