HOUSTON (KTRK) -- More than 150 people are being forced out of their apartments in northeast Houston. Dozens of families claim they were given virtually no notice they had to move out.
A posted notice at the La Casita apartments on Sunnyside at Werner informed residents that the water would be cut off and they need to move out.
"They were going to close the apartments down and the water was going to be cut off by Friday," said resident Blanca Dorado.
Upset residents wanted answers, but they weren't getting any from the apartment complex manager, Ed Thomas. When they blocked his car in an effort to get information, he called for police.
Officers carrying assault rifles arrived on the scene to keep the peace. City officials also tried to straighten the situation out.La Casita is an all bills paid complex, and many residents have just paid their rent at the beginning of the month. The complex is being foreclosed.
"There was an order for water to be cut off, but the city has instructed for that not to take place," explained Pat Trahan, a spokesperson for the city.
"We didn't get a notice," said resident Tony Roacha. "We just heard a bunch of rumors. We confronted the people in the office and they just told us no. They lied to us in our face. Hopefully, we'll get a good night's sleep tonight. Hopefully, if everything does go well, and supposedly, I heard there's going to be a new management, hopefully, we do get to stay here. I've been living here for a while and I don't want to go nowhere."
City leaders are planning a meeting for Thursday to help straighten things out. A flier is expected to be posted at the manager's office for residents to find out when it will take place.
