The deadly encounter happened around 9:30pm Sunday on Westheimer near Hayes. The young woman was heading home from her family's restaurant when she stopped to fill up her car and was shot and killed.
There are tears and grief from the loved ones of Chou Ung, 28.
"We've been calling her cell phone all night and nobody answered," said Tony Ung, Chou's brother. "Then the police came and knocked on the door."
Police delivered unthinkable news to Tony. His beloved sister was murdered as she pumped gas at a nearby gas station.
"At some point during the attempted robbery, the suspect fired several shots," said Sgt. Ryan Chandler with the Houston Police Department. "The female was struck and subsequently died at the scene."
Chou, who left her job at a family restaurant, was heading home when she stopped for gas at the Chevron station. Although police aren't sure if the suspect took anything, they believe robbery was the motive.
"As of right now, we're working under the assumption it was a random occurrence," said Sgt. Chander.
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old's family is remembering the person they lost.
"They've taken away the star of our family," said Tony. "The fun, everything, the life."
Police do have good leads in this case, including the murder weapon. They say the gunman dropped the weapon at the scene. Also, the gas station has surveillance cameras so the gunman's image may have been captured.
A $5,000 reward is being offered in this case. If you know anything about the deadly shooting, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
