HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police say they have the man responsible for a murder in north Houston last week behind bars. And that accused murderer wears a badge, or at least he did wear it.
Precinct 6 reserve Deputy Constable Jose Castillo, 39, is now out of a job and facing charges.
On Friday night at Buffalo Fred's Icehouse on North Shepherd at 27th Street, among the many patrons inside were Angel Erevia Jr., 31, and his girlfriend. But when the couple ran into Erevia's estranged wife, a scuffle ensued.
When the club closed at 2am, the estranged wife and Castillo approached the couple in the parking lot. Police say Castillo pulled a weapon, shooting Erevia four times in the back, stomach and both arms.
"A shocker. It affects all of us, all of us in law enforcement," said Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino. "You feel the pain because when somebody that is sworn to uphold the law is charged with murder, it tarnishes the badge for all of it."That's because Castillo is a 14-year veteran reserve deputy with Harris County Precinct 6 Constable's Office. The victim died from his injuries and now Castillo is charged with murder, ending his career as a police officer.
Precinct 6 is disappointed in one of their own and saddened by the loss of life.
"When situations like this occurs, a lot of people are affected," said Trevino. "My condolences to the friends and family of the deceased."
We're told Castillo, who earns his living as a security guard, was not on duty Friday night. We're also told he worked about eight hours per week as a reserve deputy constable.
