SUGAR LAND, TX (KTRK) -- A suspected bank robber is dead inside a car on Highway 59. He was reportedly shot by Sugar Land Police. Authorities have shutdown the southbound lanes of Highway 59 near the Brazos River.
The man's body remained in a gray Nissan Altima parked on the shoulder of the road during much of the police investigation.
Police say an alarm was pulled at a Wachovia Bank near Lexington at Sweetwater in Sugar Land at about 9:05am. It's unclear if the suspect got away with any money from that bank.
That person fled and Sugar Land police immediately began the search for a gray Nissan Altima that eyewitnesses reported seeing speeding away from the bank. An officer spotted the vehicle southbound on Highway 59 near the Brazos River.
There was a short pursuit but police say the suspect pulled over just south of the bridge, north of Crab River Road. That's when the shooting happened.
"The suspect got out, pointed his gun at the officer," explained Pat Policoff with the City of Sugar Land. "The officer immediately drew his weapon and used lethal force ... (firing) just once."
Traffic has been rerouted onto the feeder road at about University Boulevard. There is a considerable backup that extends into the city of Sugar Land.
The suspect has been identified as Jay Walker, 42, of Missouri City.
