HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Those living in Montrose have something new to brag about. The American Planning Association has named it one of the top ten great neighborhoods in the country.
Montrose, which is located just south of downtown, is being called a 'cultural gemstone.' It's one of Houston's oldest neighborhoods with homes built in the 1920s and even earlier. It's been the mix of old and new homes that have added to the eclectic vibe the neighborhood is known for.
The streets in Montrose are narrow and many older homes have no garages. Over the years, commercial businesses have popped up in the area. Neighbors can walk to a corner grocery store, the Museum District, or even the Rice University area.
These are all factors that led the APA's designation. Neighbors who live there have their own response as to why they chose this part of town.
"I think we deserve it. I think it's finally time we get some credit," said resident Joyce Reisdorf. "Everything is here. We have libraries, multiple universities, lots of restaurants, lots of things to do. It's nice.""For me, I love the convenience. I can go right to Westheimer, where there's a lot of shopping, " said resident Andrea Pepper.
Check out the full list of great neighborhoods, great streets and great public spaces, according to the APA.
